The Triple Bridge leads to Ljubljana magnificent old city.

Ljubljana is the loveliest, most laid-back capital in Europe.

Since the fall of Yugoslavia, Ljubljana has really come into its own as a chic and vibrant city.

A triumph of urban planning, it draws on the best bits of other European cities - the grand brigdes of Prague, the cleanliness of Vienna, the youthful energy of Berlin, the drama of Paris, the gradiosity of Budapest and the counterculture of Copenhagen - and weaves it into something distinctly Slovenian.

Ljubljana's architecture has been shaped by its various occupiers - the Romans, Italians, Hungardians and Austrians.

Conveniently, all the main tourist sites lie within easy walking distance. From the main square (Presernov Trg) the showcase Triple Bridge (see picture) leads into the magnificent old city. From here, you could slog up the hill to Ljubljana Castle where spectacular city views are afforded from the lofty heights of its 19th century tower.

Even if you aren't in town for full-scale grocery shopping, the colourful Central Market is an atmospheric place to ogle gourmet treats and farm-fresh produce.

On the topic of food, the gelato in Ljubljana is wickedly good: lick and stroll your way along the riverside where you'll find plenty of boutiques, alfresco restaurants, cafes and bars to spend your cash in.

Ljubljana has a large student population and a vibrant arts scene; keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground for what's going down, or wander over to the theatres and nightclubs of Metelokova. This gritty but cutting-edge arts precinct is located in former army barracks behind the Celica Hostel - a masterfully-converted military prison that runs daily tours of its building.
